Ensuring a Smooth and Stress-Free Dental Visit

These days, many people are apathetic, or even a little afraid, of visiting the dentist. This dental phobia often stems from concerns about pain, or perhaps even a negative experience associated with a dentist in the past. However, sedation dentistry is the go-to answer for patients who fall into this category. Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is suggested for patients with moderate dental phobia as well as those undergoing certain procedures, and it can also be used when nitrous oxide isn’t an option. It involves a small sedative pill that’s taken before the appointment so that by the time you’re seated, the effects have kicked in. You’ll remain responsive to verbal commands and completely conscious, but since it can sometimes have lingering effects that cause drowsiness, you’ll need to arrange for transportation to and from our office.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide is often referred to by its nickname—laughing gas; though it’s worth noting that it doesn’t make patients laugh. Rather, it instills warm and euphoric feelings without affecting consciousness at all. It’s perfect for patients with mild to moderate dental anxiety since it’s so easy to administer and has no lingering or ill side effects. It’s also perfectly safe, making it ideal for younger patients or those who struggle to remain seated or still.
Sedation Dentistry FAQs
Is sedation dentistry covered by insurance?
Typically, sedation dentistry is classified as a “luxury” and, therefore, is not covered by dental insurance providers. That said, there are some exceptions. For example, if you need to have multiple teeth extracted or you have a disability that makes it impossible to get the care you require without it, then a portion of the cost may be covered. The good news is that our team at Kringle Dentistry is in-network with most major PPO providers, so we can help make understanding and using any available benefits you have easy!
Is sedation dentistry worth it?
That depends! If the anxiety you feel is mild enough that watching your favorite movie or listening to an entertaining podcast is all you need to make it through your appointment, then you might not feel like sedation dentistry is worth it. If, on the other hand, you struggle with considerable anxiety, the sights and sounds of a dental office put you on-edge, or you have been putting off getting the care you need because you are feeling extremely nervous, then sedation dentistry is definitely worth the investment. After all, even mild solutions like nitrous oxide can help considerably with dental-related anxiety, sensitive gag reflexes, and head/neck/jaw pain in the treatment chair!
How long does dental sedation last?
The effects of nitrous oxide dissipate almost instantly (that’s why you don’t need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from your appointment!). On the other hand, more powerful forms of sedation dentistry, like oral conscious sedation, typically last for the rest of the day. If we determine that this is the ideal form of dental sedation for you, then we will give you detailed aftercare instructions, like not driving or operating any heavy machinery for at least 24 hours.
Can dental sedation make you sick?
Nitrous oxide rarely ever results in feelings of nausea because it’s so mild. Since oral conscious sedation is a bit stronger, it can happen from time to time. That’s why we typically ask patients not to eat in the hours leading up to their appointment, especially if they are prone to feeling nauseous.
Does dental sedation make you tell secrets?
This misconception largely stems from TV shows and movies that depict the characters acting completely different for comedic effect. However, dental sedation won’t make you say something you normally wouldn’t. In other words, nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation are not “truth serums” that will make you spill any secrets, so you don’t need to worry!
Am I a good candidate for sedation dentistry?
The easiest way to find out if you’re a candidate for sedation dentistry is by scheduling a consultation with our friendly and experienced dental team. Once we have the opportunity to learn about any allergies you have, review your dental history, and hear why you’re interested in nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation, we can determine if you’re a candidate and if there is anything else we can do to give you the positive, comfortable experience you deserve at our Grenada dental office.
