Are Dental Implants Really More Expensive?

If you’ve done any research about dental implants, you may already be aware that they can be a bit more expensive than other types of dental prosthetics. But while they do carry a higher upfront cost than dentures, bridges, and implant dentures, believe it or not they can actually save you quite a bit of money over time. Here’s why an investment in dental implants is an important investment in your oral health!

What Are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

Dental implants are permanent tooth replacements that are secured to your jawbone to restore the look and functionality of your smile. These durable prosthetics not only allow for greater biteforce than dentures and bridges, but they also help prevent jawbone deterioration like nothing else can.

Dental implants also look and feel like your natural teeth, so nobody will know they’re not “real” unless you tell them, and because the crowns (teeth) of your implants are not biological, they cannot become decayed like real teeth can. In fact, with proper brushing, flossing, and use, you can expect your crowns to last 20 years or more, making them a significantly better value than dentures or other prosthetics that need replacement every five to seven years.

How to Extend the Life of Your Dental Implants

Because your dental implants are a significant investment, it is important to keep them in great shape so you can enjoy them for as long as possible. Here are a few easy ways to ensure that they stay looking and feeling good as new:

  • Always brush your teeth twice a day, and floss at least once a day, even on and around your dental implants.
  • Don’t smoke, as this can stain your crowns and increase your risk of implant failure.
  • Don’t skip your regular dental exam and cleanings.
  • Avoid eating foods that might stain your teeth, such as those with tannins or deep colors.
  • Do not use your dental implants (or your real teeth!) for anything but chewing food. No tearing packaging, biting fingernails, or chewing on pen caps during boring meetings!
  • Avoid foods that are excessively sticky or chewy, and never crunch ice or hard candy.

Remember, while your dental implants may cost more than other prosthetics up front, with proper care and usage they will pay for themselves over time, and after all, who can put a price on a healthy smile?
